Honors English II

Hello Sophomores, if you are reading this post you have found our class website. Good. While we are doing our blogging unit, you will check in here once a week and then you will log in to your typepad account to post. I'll give you a topic on Monday and you will have until Saturday of that week to complete the assignment. There will be a time stamp on your post so I will be able to tell what time you hit 'save' and submitted your post. You will also have to leave at least one comment on someone else's post during the week. Remember to sign your comment with the same name as you sign your posts. It has to be the same or I will not be able to count it toward your grade. To let me know that you found this site, leave me a comment. To do that, click the comments link at the bottom of the page.

Assignment for week of December 9th through 15th

This is our last week of blogging. Your first assignment is to evaluate your blogging experience (discuss who made the most relevant posts, who gave good comments, your least favorite topic etc. - just don't bash anyone)

Assignment number two - I've already discussed it in class. Find some Pride and Prejudice fan fiction. A good place to start will be fanfic.net.  Find a story you like (suitable for class) Tell why you like it and then link to it. Then read someone else's choice and review it in the comments of their post.

Assignment for week of December 2 through December 8th, 2007

Discuss "The Paperhanger".  The Harrikin is a recurring setting in Gay's work. The Nashville Scene describes it :

The Harrikin was once replete with mining towns and mining money, but when the ore was all extracted, “the people left like the Maya abandoning their cities to build other cities…, [and] the Harrikin grew wild. Trees sprouted up through the works of man. Kudzu and wild grapevines climbed the machinery until ultimately these machines seemed some curious hybrid of earth and steel.” When a massive tornado—thought to be a hurricane, or “harrikin,” by locals—ripped through a few years later, it upturned houses and trees and dirt roads, leaving behind a tangled maze.

What do you think the Harrikin symbolizes? Also What did you get out of the story?

For your second post, write two sentences using words from unit 12.
